Introduction to a Future Geophysicist

Hi! My name is Sarah. I am a Junior here and my major is Geophysics. Geophysics is a pretty dang uncommon major, and I am one of two girls in my graduating class. The coolest thing about my major is that we get to learn all about how the earth beneath our feet works and WHY, which is interesting considering all the earthquakes we have been having here in Oklahoma lately!
My favorite class I have taken so far has been Volcanoes and Earthquakes. It was a really fun class. I am really looking forward to my classes this semester, I am finally getting into the interesting classes in my major that are all about the geophysics and structural geology of the earth. This is my last Gen Ed class!!

The most exciting thing I did over break was go to the Grand Canyon and also get a research position with one of my professors about whether or not there is a correlation between the earthquakes we have been having here in Oklahoma and any fracking sites. A lot of people have pointed out that we already know there is a correlation between waste water disposal wells and the earthquakes but there is a distinction between fracking sites and waste water disposal sites.

My career goals are to travel to as many geological sites as possible and to either work for the USGS or an oil company as a head Geophysicist. I am really interested in Seismic Interpretation and Data Analysis, so I would like to be the head of something like that. I also want to complete my own research project that comes up with conclusive and positive evidence towards my hypothesis. Geology/Energy jobs also come with a lot of moving, and I am really interested in living in foreign countries. My freshman year of high school I lived in England for my dads job and it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life, something I definitely hope to repeat some day.

One last thing about me is my two baby dogs. (They aren't actually babies, they're actually old) Their names are Gus and Ellie, and Gus is a Schnoodle (a Schnauzer/Poodle mix) and Ellie is a Teacup Schnauzer. They are very funny little dogs that love each other and I love how they look with their little beards. Ellie is a huge "daddy's girl" and has my dad wrapped around her little paw. He was one of those dads that "didn't want another dog" and yet every night she is cuddled on his lap, and in the winter he zips her up in his jacket to keep her from getting cold! I love dogs and always have, and I am really excited for the day when I can have my own dog!

Gus the Schnoodle wondering why he hasn't been given any popcorn yet!

Ellie looking much more enthusiastic than Gus!

Ellie carrying her little bone like a cigar. She carries it around like that until she finds a suitable carpet to eat it on!

  1. Oh, now I feel better, Sarah! I was pretty sure I had not met a geophysics major before... and now I know why: you are the few, the proud, the geophysicists! I was the only Polish major in my class at Berkeley; it's fun being in an uncommon major. :-)

Are you interested in doing earth mythology for class? There are so many different gods and goddesses associated with volcanoes and earthquakes in different cultures; that could be really fun... and even useful if you will be traveling; different places have different stories. I lived in Hawaii when I was in high school, and of course the volcanoes there were amazing; Pele is their volcano goddess. Wikipedia: Pele

And both your dogs are so cute: maybe they will make a guest appearance in some of your storytelling for this semester.

  2. Hi Sarah! It is so cool that you are one of the few women in you class! As for your major, how did you get interested in geophysics? My knowledge of anything with the word physics in it extends to the two semesters of Physics for Life Science majors here at OU and let's just say I still know nothing. Do you have to take a lot of physics classes or am I completely getting the wrong idea about your major? Your dogs are both adorable. I have schnauzer named Cash. In total, my family has six dogs at home right now, insane right? It was great learning a little about you!

  3. Hi Sarah!

That is so cool that you are in such a unique field of study and that you get to be one of the few women in that field from OU. From what I have learned about your summer, I would say that you are kicking butt at getting closer to your future goals. Keep it up! Like you, I would LOVE to complete some research in my field that allows me the opportunity to travel and share with the world.

I look forward to reading your posts throughout the semester!

  4. Hi Sarah! Geophysics is an awesome major, it sounds fascinating! I love science, and wish I'd taken more classes like that. For a while I thought that I might major in petroleum geology, but I got scared off by the math. I actually like math, but I hadn't taken a formal class in almost 10 years...it would've taken me forever in remedial classes to get to where I needed to be. You seem to really love what you're doing, and have some definite goals in mind. I always admire people who have found their passion and are willing to work for it. I look forward to reading more of your posts!

  5. Hello again! :) WOW! Geophysics, huh? That sounds really interesting! As a chemical engineer, I am most interested about where to source certain compounds and elements from the earth. I love the study of chemistry and would really like to learn more about where the elements are in the earth and how we can refine them! One of my goals in life is to have a self-sustaining environment where I can make practically anything I would ever need by myself from the elements around me, which will require me to learn about the minerals in earth and where to find resources! It would be good to have knowledge like you have around for that!

  7. Oh my goodness girl we have a lot in common!!

But first, I just have to say, bruh!!! 1 of 2 girls in your major?? That's amazing!! You go girl!
I also took a volcanoes and earthquakes class and it was so much fun! I don't remember my professor's name but he had an Australian accent and was super excited about all the earthquakes we had a while ago so that was fun!
I went to the Grand Canyon over spring break last year and oh my goodness it was breathtaking! Truly an amazing experience! I'm so glad you got to go!
Gus and Ellie are perfect names and I know I haven't met your dogs but I already love them! My brother has a miniature schnauzer named Rebound and he's just the fluffiest, snuggliest little thing! He likes to give hugs! Dogs are amazing!

It was so great to read about you! I look forward to hearing more from you throughout the semester!

  8. Hi Sarah!
Wow, GEOPHYSICIST! That is AWESOME! I have one friend who is a Geology major, and see his snapstories about going on different field trips all the time for his classes. Is this something that you are able to do as well? Also, your dogs are just so cute. I am also a big dog fan as I have a German Shepherd of my own. He is one of the reasons I love coming home!
Nice to meet you Sarah! Looking forward to read your stories this semester!

  9. Hi Sarah! Your puppies are beautiful! Loved seeing your pictures — I live with a little terrier mix myself and seeing her at the end of my day is always the sweetest part of my day. Also, I love your passion for what you do. It sounds fascinating and really timely with current issues in Oklahoma, and going to the Grand Canyon is a dream of mine. I also hope to move around a bit with my job in the future — living in England sounds amazing! I hope you have a wonderful semester — it was great learning more about you.

  10. Hey, Sarah! Wow, geophysics major, that sounds like heavy stuff but I can tell that you are passionate about it and that's so great! I took a geology for non-majors class and it was so interesting! My favorite part of that class was the lab because it was very hands on. Schnoodle may be the best name for a dog breed that I have ever heard, and Gus and Ellie are so cute, I also love dogs! I have an 11-year-old, three-legged Great Pyrenees/Bernese Mountain Dog mix named Earl, he is my favorite old man. I hope you are having a great semester, it was nice to learn about such an uncommon major.

  11. Hi Sarah! My dad majored in Geology and is now a Geophysicist by trade, so it's really cool to meet another person who so interested in it. It is a very uncommon major but a really cool one (as you know by now since, you know, it's your major)! My dad is in the oil industry and you're definitely right about moving around. My parents started in California, moved to Houston, then we moved to Indonesia, and then back to Houston. How was living in England? We have friends who lived there and loved it! Your dogs are so cute! Your dad zipping up Ellie in his jacket in the winter is just such an adorable thing to imagine! Can't wait to get to know you better throughout the semester!

  12. Hi Sarah!
I think it’s really cool that you are majoring in geophysics! My whole time at OU I have only met one other person with this major. I very much liked reading your introduction and exploring your blog. Also, I like how you incorporated a video along with personal photos of your dogs. They are so cute! I hope you are having a good semester and I can’t wait to see what else you post this semester!

  14. Hi Sarah! I think it is awesome that you are pursuing a career with that major even though it’s something not most people know about. I am jealous that you got to live in England for a year since I have always wanted to go there, but I’m sure it was a great experience you will never forget. Lastly, both of your dogs are incredibly adorable.

  15. Hey Sarah! Thank you for including the video in your introduction. I could have put two and two together, but the video made it much more interesting. I did not know that we had this major here. I bet it is intriguing with all the earthquakes. It sounds like you are genuinely interested in your major and that can be more than a blessing than you may know. Thank you for sharing!

  16. Hey there, Sarah!

You definitely have one of the coolest majors at OU! I am happy to hear that you are very passionate and excited about the classes you are taking. I took a Geology class my freshman year, and it is definitely one of my favorite classes from the past four years! I sometimes wish I had been able to pursue a degree in Geology. I wish you the best for the future!

  18. Hi Sarah! Wow, I have never met a Geophysicist. I do not think i could do that, so props to you for being one of the few to pursue it. I took a Geology class sophomore year and even though it was for non-majors it was still really hard. Your dogs are so cute!!! I am so jealous you got to live in England. It would be my dream to live out of the country for at least a year or 2! I look forward to reading your stories!

  19. Hello Sarah! Your major can lead you around the world. I am originally from California so we were taught a lot about earthquakes from pre-k on. It looks like you know what you want to do when you are finished with school. I am interested in what your findings were when you looked into the earthquakes here. As far as I knew there were no faultlines in this state.

  20. Hi, Sarah! That’s an interesting thing to study, like you said especially since we’re in Oklahoma. Congrats on this being you last gen ed. Class. It’s easy to see that you really like where your studies are headed and it’s cool that you have such great goals to look forward to achieving. By the way, I’m sure many people have commented this but your dogs are really adorable.

  21. Hey Sarah! Definitely a field of study you don't see everyone doing. That's great! I can tell you are very passionate about what you want to do and love the classes you get to take. I know how you feel when you say that you wont have to take any more gen. ed classes. When you get done with those classes and get to focus on classes that are more of what we want to spend our time on, ya know. Anyways it was nice to get to know you!

  22. Hello Sarah, I think it’s very cool that you are majoring in Geophysics! I’ve always been an outdoor kind of guy so I think it’s great that you are doing something that will maybe help our Earth one day! I’ve never been to the Grand Canyon before, but it is on my bucket list and I was planning on going this next summer. Hope you have a great semester!

  23. Hello, Sarah! I am Sarah as well! I am sure you have noticed that Sarah is not exactly the most unique name in the world but it is always fun to ask the whole "with or without an 'h'" question. Anyways it is so cool that you are a geophysics major! I am a chemical engineering major so I kinda understand what it is like to be in a degree area that is mostly guys. So congrats on being a female in a STEM major! Also, it is so interesting that you are doing research. I am also doing research in the spring, so I suppose we have more in common than our name. Best of luck with the rest of your semester.

  24. Hi Sarah! I'm glad I got to read your introduction for the end of the semester. :) I've definitely never met a geophysics major before, but it was cool reading about what you do. Your dogs are precious, and my dad is just like that with our littlest dog, Rory. She's a Maltese-poodle mix and my dad always pretends not to like her, but always has her snuggled up next to him! Can't wait for you to get your own dog one day soon! Hope your finals go smoothly.
